The process begins with the artist carving a rough model in clay or plastiline, which is then shaped into beeswax. After approval, a metal mold is handmade by carefully outlining and layering clay around the wax model, followed by casting with heat-resistant plaster to create gypsum molds. These molds are then used to produce the figures by injecting specially formulated PVC at high pressure—resistant, detailed, and recyclable. The final step is hand-painting by skilled artisans, a centuries-old tradition rooted in the rich craftsmanship of the Lucchesi hills, giving each figure its warmth and expressiveness.

Scale size refers to the proportional height of human figures in a nativity set. For instance, a 5-inch scale means average adult figures, such as Joseph or a shepherd, are about 5 inches tall. Other figures and accessories, like animals, angels, children, and buildings, are crafted in matching proportions for a cohesive display. That means some figures may be taller than 5 inches and some may be shorter.

Fontanini offers various scale sizes, with the 5-inch scale being the most popular, followed by additional options like 3.5-inch, 7.5-inch, 12-inch, 20-inch, and beyond. They separate — in true Fontanini fashion, Baby Jesus figures are removable from the manger. For smaller scales, the Baby Jesus and manger are typically sold together; at larger scales (for example, 70" scale), they are offered as separate pieces.

Yes — Fontanini figures 20" and larger are made from marble-based resin and hand-painted with lead-free acrylics, so they’re suitable for outdoor display. To preserve color and detail, place pieces in a shaded or sheltered spot away from constant direct sun and consider applying a UV-resistant clear coat periodically. Normal wear and weathering can occur over time when exposed to the elements.
